Promoting Environmental Care

As an ECOColegio and the only institution in Lanzarote with the environmental accreditation and the ‘Blue Aquamarine School’ label, Colegio Arenas Internacional promotes ecological awareness from an early age.

Among the projects highlighted was ‘Think Global, Act Local’, a Rancho Texas initiative that is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 14: Underwater Life. This activity, in which students from Infant 5, Primary 1 and Secondary 1 took part, allowed students to learn about the importance of protecting the oceans and marine life.

enlightenedDuring the first week of November, the Infant and Primary students visited Rancho Texas as the culmination of the project, with an upcoming visit scheduled for the Secondary students. In class, they had previously learned about the formation of Lanzarote, the role of volcanic tubes, the importance of caring for the water and interesting facts about the life of dolphins and Humboldt penguins. Miguel, from Infantil, expressed his amazement when he said: ‘I learnt how the Chinijo archipelago was formed’. And for Lola, another Infant student, the experience was eye-opening: ‘I liked it a lot and I learned that there is more water than land on planet Earth’.

The educational visit was guided by an expert from the Rancho Texas, who reinforced these concepts as the students explored the environmental classroom (which recreates a volcanic tube) and various themed rooms, such as the engine room, volcano room, ocean room and environmental room. The students also enjoyed a special moment in the dolphinarium, where the monitor explained fascinating facts about dolphins. Francisco, from Infantil, was impressed to learn that ‘the dolphin has its nose up and uses it to breathe when it comes out of the water’.

The project generated valuable reflections from the students. One of the primary school pupils commented seriously: ‘Marine animals suffer when we throw rubbish into the sea because they can eat it.’ Another highlighted how recycling is a way to protect the environment: ‘We can protect nature if we recycle.’ In addition, reflections on responsible consumption emerged: ‘If we give our things away to people who need them, we can help the planet because we don't waste so much plastic.’ Others expressed concern about ocean conservation, highlighting the importance of algae: ‘If algae clean our air so much, we should help the ocean to be clean.’

With activities like this, Arenas International School strengthens its commitment to educate responsible students who are aware of the importance of caring for our planet. 🌱🌊
